2009 Trek to K2 Base Camp
The author’s trek through Pakistan in June 2009 with photographer Andrew Ensslen. The journey led north from the capital Islamabad on the Karakoram Highway to the hill town of Skardu, the village of Askole, and then by foot for six days to the blasted terrain of the Baltoro Glacier and eventually K2 Base Camp at 16,000 feet above sea level. The trek ended with a helicopter airlift after altitude sickness struck Ensslen. Photographs: Andrew Ensslen.
